Nose Rendering Process

From basic shapes to fully rendered nose
0% complete ~8 min remaining

1 Establish the Basic Structure

Start by breaking down the nose into simple geometric forms: a pyramid for the bridge, spheres for the tip, and triangular shapes for the nostrils. This creates a solid foundation.

Pro Tip

Focus on the overall shape rather than details at this stage. Pay attention to the angle and proportions relative to the rest of the face.

2 Define Planes and Light Source

Identify the main planes of the nose: bridge, sides, tip, and nostrils. Establish your light source and apply base values to each plane accordingly.

Key Planes

  • Bridge plane (usually lightest)
  • Side planes (mid-tones)
  • Tip plane (highlight area)
  • Nostril openings (darkest areas)

3 Develop Core Shadows

Add the main shadow areas, focusing on the underside of the nose, the sides of the bridge, and around the nostrils. These shadows create the illusion of depth and form.

Pro Tip

The cast shadow under the nose is crucial for grounding it to the face. Make sure it follows the contour of the upper lip.

4 Refine Transitions and Edges

Soften harsh transitions between planes while maintaining clear form. Pay special attention to the bridge-to-side transitions and the edges of the nostrils.

Edge Control

  • Soften transitions on rounded areas
  • Keep sharper edges on bony structures
  • Blend nostril edges for natural look
  • Maintain crisp highlights on the tip

5 Add Texture and Details

Introduce subtle skin texture, pores, and variations in color temperature. The tip of the nose often has slightly redder tones while the bridge may appear cooler.

Pro Tip

Use a textured brush at low opacity to suggest pores without overdoing it. Focus texture around the tip and sides of the nose where pores are most visible.

6 Final Polish and Integration

Refine values, enhance contrast where needed, and ensure the nose integrates naturally with the rest of the face. Adjust edges and add final subtle highlights.

Pro Tip

Step back from your work frequently to check proportions. A common mistake is making noses too large or too small in relation to other facial features.
